Clare Hackney teaching families on how to make bread

We had a fun on Tuesday afternoon at the Devonshire Children’s Centre last week as we spent time with families learning how to make bread and Carrot and Coriander soup.

We spoke to one of the mum’s at class today and we asked her why she comes to the group, here’s what she said;

“I like to cook and I like to get my daughter involved with other children. It’s just the two of us at home so this is a great excuse to get out of the flat and to spend time with other people”

We also spoke to Jim, one of the volunteers that have been helping out for the past 6 months. Jim is 73 years old and an Eastbourne resident. Jim shared how he first heard about Community Stuff from one of the founders, Clare Hackney:

“I first met Clare at the allotment and we both shared a passion for cooking. She told me about Community Stuff and I was keen to help out”. Jim also began to share more about why he is volunteering “We can all see the problems that are in Eastbourne at the moment and we are all part of the solution”

Every week the group learn how to cook a new skill, take home recipes and eat together. This is a pure example of community working together.
